Problem : There is ghosting or patterning on the TV screen
Solution
Change UHF output frequency settings on decoder and retune TV or call an accredited installer to attend to the problem Also caused by Broadcast Interference, intermodulation distortion (amplifiers), adjacent channel interference [ remove antenna/aerial feed] from RF in port of decoder
Problem : There is a black/dark band moving up and down the TV screen
Solution
If yes, then it is a faulty antenna power supply – call installer If no, then: a) Check other TV channels b) Interference from the antenna system c) Faulty RF cables: This Could also be decoder power supply related – no proper earthing on chassis – decoder to be swapped out
Problem : There is a secondary image moving behind the picture on the DStv service
Solution
- a) Disconnect the terrestrial antenna to view
- b) Probe and check UHF settings
- c) Advise customer to Change UHF output frequency on TV to match decoder.
- d) Call the installer if problem persists
- E) Broadcast Interference, adjacent channel interference – remove aerial cable from RF in port
Problem : The picture is rolling
Possible Cause
This is either a TV related fault (mostly on old TV sets), or decoder could be faulty
Solution
- Check other TV channels - if same – TV is faulty - if not – decoder is faulty - Try and retune TV or call an accredited installer to attend to the problem
- If more than one TV – check another TV • If same – decoder is faulty If not – TV faulty
Problem : Black and white picture
Possible Cause
The fine tuning on the TV might be out
S-Video setting incorrect (using s-video cables)
Incorrect TV system settings
The decoder is faulty
Solution
The fine tuning on the TV might be out - Fine tune the colour settings on the TV Incorrect TV system Faulty TV set – no colour - Luminance: The part of a TV waveform that contains the brightness information. Call an accredited installer to attend to the problem
S-Video setting incorrect (using s-video cables) - Check Scart Source settings Select DStv menu Advanced Options TV Installation Change RGB to SVIDEO. Call an accredited installer to attend to the problem
Incorrect TV system settings - Check TV system Check DStv menu, TV installation settings (PAL setting) Call an accredited installer to attend to the problem NB. Program could be broadcasting in Black/White (e.g. TCM)
The decoder is faulty - Have decoder Swapped
Problem : One or more of the picture colours is missing
Possible Cause
Check TV
Check other channels
The decoder is faulty
Solution : Check TV - Retune TV or call an accredited installer to attend to the problem
Check other channels - If okay, possible transmission related, check decoder Check the video RCA if connected properly. RCA cable could be faulty Luminance: The part of a TV waveform that contains the brightness information – not firing on all RGB primary colours
The decoder is faulty - Have decoder Swapped
Problem : The picture breaks up into small coloured blocks followed by short blank screens (pixilation)
Possible Cause
The decoder is overheating
Faulty decoder
Solution
The decoder is overheating - If decoder is covered by a VCR/DVD or decoder is on top of the TV, or is in a closed cabinet, move to a location with good ventilation and wait 30 minutes – reconnect
Faulty decoder - Have decoder Swapped
Problem : The picture breaks up into coloured blocks followed by short blank screens and a screeching noise in the background
Possible Cause
There is a weak incoming signal. Transmission. Installations. Rain Fade Solar Outage Faulty decoder
Solution
Check signal strength and signal quality Overheating Check LNB cables Hard reboot the DSD Probe on weather conditions Installation related – coaxial cable brittle – taken in moisture – signal levels degraded. Have decoder Swapped and if problem persists at home Call an accredited installer to attend to the problem
Problem : Snowy picture on TV (using RCA / SCART / S-Video connections)
Possible Cause
RCA / SCART / S-Video leads could be faulty
Solution
Replace leads or connectors TV set on wrong input – On selected RF channel
Problem : Snowy picture on screen using RF connections
Possible Cause & Solution
TV fine tuning could be out (very seldom) - If there is more than 1 TV in the house, first check to see if both pictures are snowy. If not, try fine tuning the TV with a snowy picture. Electrical Interference - no proper earthing. Inferior incoming aerial signal, Broadcast Interference – sparkles. Remove aerial cable from RF input. Call an accredited installer to attend to the problem
Terrestrial antenna gain on the amplifier box is set too high – this would cause Intermodulation Distortion and not a snowy picture – would cause a distorted picture to appear on TV - Pull out the terrestrial antenna cable, and if it clears it is a possible antenna problem. Advise customer of an accredited installer in the area or closest one, it is very important to make the customer aware of the installers CALL OUT FEE (currently R350)
The splitter/amplifier could be faulty - Check if the snowy picture on far TV is worse than the near TV. If so. advise the customer of an accredited installer in the area or closest one, it is very important to make the customer aware of the Installers CALL OUT FEE
The RF cables could be faulty, Also, old brittle coaxial cable - Replace the RF cable
The RF modulator in the decoder could be faulty. The RF connector at the back of the decoder could be broken or faulty - It could be possible that the RF modulator is faulty If RF connector is broken, have decoder swapped out and advise the customer of charges if physical/ wilful damage irrespective of the customer has DCC.
Problem : Snowy screen on TV – but no picture (DSD1131/1132)
Possible Cause & Solution
The decoder could be on standby, i.e. red dot or time displayed on the decoder front panel - Press standby on either the remote control or the front of the panel of the decoder
Decoder power could be off - Advise customer to check the wall plug and the decoder
UHF tuning on the TV could be out - Retune TV on UHF until two white lines and a black background appears – store on TV or call an accredited installer to attend to the problem
UHF tuning on decoder could be out - Retune decoder on UHF until you find two white lines with a black background or call an accredited installer to attend to the problem
The RF cable could be broken / faulty - Replace RF cable
Check cable and connections (RF Centre pin) - Check that fly lead is properly connected
