If you have any of the problems listed below, see below the specific clues that you need to know to establish the problem:

➢ Four horizontal lines flashing on the decoder (searching for signal)

➢ Message on screen – no signal or searching for signal at MHz/Scan

➢ Dstv not scanning  : The most basic reason as to why your dstv is not scanning is because the dstv dish signal is so poor at the time. Probably due to bad weather or a poor dish installation for new customers or a the dstv dish alignment with the dstv satelite has changed.

If its bad weather also known as rain fade, please wait until the weather settles and then attempt the scannn process.

If its poor installation or bad LNB device to a change in the dstv dish alignment with the dstv satelite, you will have to get hold of one of the many available dstv installers in your area to do some maintaince work on your dstv setup / installation

Clues on Residential Dwellings / Installations

  1. Check different channels (vert/hor)
  2. What is the weather like? If there is bad weather i.e., heavy rain wind and movement of trees, (also known as rain fade) then advise the customer to wait until the weather clears as this can cause picture tearing and scratching sounds. If the weather is fine, or if the customer wants to still attempt to correct the problem, then please refer to the Menu Navigation Route
  3. How long have you had the dish and has an installer worked on it recently? (LNB Frequencies, LNB Power, LNB Cable)
  4. Have you had this type of problem recently?
  5. Was the decoder disconnected recently or was there any maintenance done on the property
  6. Check LNB cables

Clues on Communal dwellings / Installations

  1. Do you have you own satellite dish, or is it a communal dish?
  2. If yes, then is the problem common to the other decoder’s feeding off the dish?

More Guidelines to establish the problem

✓ Check if the LNB cable is screwed on properly

✓ Check if the correct Satellite has been selected – DStv IS 7/20

✓ Check if the LNB configuration and the Network configuration are correct on the home network.

✓ Confirm what kind of installation customer has – SatCr (HDPVR), MUD system or SUD installation

✓ If changes have been made, scan all networks. (for HD decoders press the yellow button to scan)

✓ If the problem persists, try resetting to factory default. Always confirm what kind of installation – Sat Cr, MUD system or SUD installation before resetting to factory defaults

  • NB: Only attempt once you have confirmed current customer setting e.g. UHF settings/ LNB Setting
  1. If you are is using a communal dish, DO NOT RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULTS.

Problem : Four horizontal lines flashing on the decoder

Possible Cause

The decoder has reset itself to the incorrect LNB/Network settings. i.e., the decoder has reverted to the incorrect satellite settings, (generally after a power failure or storm)

Suggested Solution

Check LNB frequency settings on the decoder and correct if wrong. Based on the decoder model, follow the appropriate Menu Navigation Route steps.

Enable IS7 (home network)

Problem : Message on screen – no signal or searching for signal at MHz

Possible Cause

LNB power could be off

Suggested Solution

Set LNB power to on

Problem : Picture is tearing (Pixilation)

Possible Cause

Signal strength is too low, i.e. below 50% for MUDS 60% for SUDS use as a guideline, probe and check weather conditions

Suggested Solution

  • First, have the decoder tested.
  • Contact an accredited installer to attend to problem

my dstv decoder is not scanning - possible reasons why are listed above

my dstv is showing no signal

If your DSTV is showing no signal, there are several possible causes and solutions. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve the issue:

  1. Check your connections: Ensure that all cables, including the HDMI or AV cables and the satellite dish cable, are securely connected to your DSTV decoder and TV. Loose or damaged connections can cause signal issues.

  2. Verify the input source: Make sure your TV is set to the correct input source corresponding to the HDMI or AV port connected to your DSTV decoder.

  3. Inspect the satellite dish: Ensure that your satellite dish is correctly aligned, free from damage or debris, and securely mounted. Bad weather, strong winds, or other external factors can sometimes misalign or damage the dish, causing signal loss.

  4. Reset your decoder: Try resetting your DSTV decoder by unplugging it from the power outlet, waiting for 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in. This can help resolve temporary software glitches or signal issues.

  5. Check for weather-related issues: Heavy rain, storms, or other extreme weather conditions can temporarily disrupt satellite signals. If you're experiencing bad weather, wait for the conditions to improve and then check your signal again.

  6. Scan for channels: Navigate to your decoder's settings and perform a channel scan to search for available channels and establish a signal.

  7. Verify your account status: Make sure your DSTV subscription is active and up to date. If your account is suspended or has an outstanding balance, you may experience signal issues.

  8. Contact DSTV customer support: If you've tried all the troubleshooting steps above and still have no signal, contact DSTV customer support for assistance. They can help you identify and resolve any technical issues or send a technician to your location if necessary.
